Are You Really Prepared For Severe Weather ?

6/6/2019 (Permalink)

Be prepared for severe weather and tune in to local weather forecasts and alerts

While no one really likes to think about it, it’s important to remember that when it comes to Mother Nature, disaster can strike at any time. Since most of us don’t really like to think about it, most people are not prepared for it. Even though many may think they are, they often do not have everything they’d need prepared. Being prepared for any emergency will help to alleviate stress when disaster does strike.

When severe weather threatens, we need to prepare for the possibility of damages occurring not only to ourselves, but also to our home and business.  Thunderstorms, hail, rain, hurricanes, strong winds and tornadoes cause varying degrees of damage.

An important thing to remember when faced with potential severe weather is to stay informed.

Stay tuned to your local weather report for your area or your destination. Be it via television, their website, their Facebook, or their Twitter, The Weather Channel or local news are good for seeing if there is a chance of severe weather. Often your favorite radio station may keep you informed on weather updates as well. Just make sure you are tuning in to a station that’s local so that weather is up to date specifically for your area.

Remember that storms can often develop quickly and without a lot of advanced warning.  Many storms can also turn from being nearby to where they then otherwise may affect your directly. Know what’s going on nearby.

Severe weather can interrupt plans. You may need to change your plans, or at least wait until the threat of severe weather has passed before being able to go about your day or with any travel plans. Be advised it is not good to go out in severe weather. Stay indoors or underground in a proper “safe zone”. Knowing in advance where to take cover in your home or business if taking cover from strong winds or storms becomes necessary, is key to your safety. Stay away from windows and doors. Do not take cover nearby or close to objects that can harm you if they are to fall onto you. Use caution if you must go out in severe weather. Proceed with extra caution and drive at much slower speeds on roads. Be aware of pooling water and avoid driving on any roads that have even minor flooding.

Having an emergency kit in your home and vehicle can provide you with much-needed necessities if caught without power or if you are stranded. For a complete list of what to prepare in your emergency kit, check out our blog called – It Is Best To Be Prepared For Storms Before They Happen
